Today American football is an incredibly popular sport and a huge industry, with millions watching the games and taking part in NFL betting either online or by means of traditional methods. However the history of the National Football League goes back a long way, with modern variants of the game believed to originate in England around the 12th century. However, it was not until the mid point of the 19th century that the divide between the different types of football became distinct, leading to football and rugby. The current sport known as American football developed as a mixture of these, still being referred to simply as ‘football’ in that country.

The very first ever professional American football match was in 1895 and took place in Pennsylvania, in the town of Latrobe. The game was between a team from Latrobe and one representing another Pennsylvania town, Jeannette. Over the next few years, the number of professional American Football teams gradually increased, with other early sides including the Olympics – from McKeesport in Pennsylvania; the Duquesnes of Pittsburgh, also in Pennsylvania and the Canton Ohio Bulldogs. Among the stars of early American Football were Jim Thorpe, Fritz Pollard and Willie Heston.

The first league was launched in 1920, and it was renamed the NFL in 1922. However it was only in the 1930s when stars from the college game began to turn professional that the game rose in popularity. This was further enhanced by the development of a national championship final game, from 1933, and by the 1950s professional American Football had risen to the same status as sports such as baseball, even overtaking it in many places by the 1960s. The launch of the Super Bowl saw NFL football become the favourite spectator sport in America throughout the 1970s and 1980s and, to this day, it remains immensely popular amongst both sports fans and fans of NFL betting.
